“I was with 2/4 Hotel company Oct 68 thru Feb 69 and have no memory of anything from 15 Dec 68 to Feb13th 69, not even talks with other Marines, except maybe time at Camlo. There was a burned out skeleton of a helicopter, CH-46 maybe, and oddly bare ground and an eerie feeling. If I am remembering this correctly, there might be a chance more could come back. I’ve searched for years and found only 1 Marine left, and he can’t recall. Tried the USMC, archives and countless websites and no response. Can you and would you help?”

What date I don’t remember.
But when we were at LZ Cates I was at the bottom of the hill,
getting the green water cans filled either from the creek down below or maybe those big black water bags were set down there.
I was using the mule. I think there were two more of us from comm platoon.
A Huey came in, I think the paymaster.
The Huey took off and the blades hit the trees, came down and exploded in flames. I remember it just dripping it was so hot.
Maybe that’s the chopper he is referring to.
I have a picture of a burned up chopper down in the woods near that water point. I believe it was a UH34 but hard to tell. I was in the engineer pit. We were told to drop every tree inside the perimeter. There was one massive sassafras tree I had to make a small shape charge and set it up sideways to knock it down. Got an ass chewing from a platoon commander because it messed up his lines.
I remember the pay master crash. It was a H34 zoom climbing on takeoff down the valley. His wheels hit the trees. I was with 2/4 S-3

G 2/1 arrived in country in August 1965. At or around Nov /Dec we replaced F 2/4 Do to heavy losses. I was in first platoon. Looking for a former Marine in my squad, last name Madrid. Any help finding him and other Marines of F 2/4 1965-1966.
I haven’t heard from anyone in my unit 1967-1968 2/4 3rd div. Gulf co. When we were in Dong-Ha a helicopter when down an if I remember right General Hawmoth was aboard. We had just lost to many good Americans . Just don’t want to mention those we lost in all those operations during that eats. In Vietnam. For those who came back welcome home.
Looks like a good forum to say, “Hello” to all my old buddies from Golf company
2/4, (1/67 to 2/68) who are still with us. We gave em hell, didn’t we…and they certainly returned the favor. 🤠
Welcome home Mike. I first joined up with 2/4 in February 68 outside Camp Carrol along the access road. The Marine I was placed with told me his name was Dan Daily , I was his replacement and he was going home tomorrow. I am pretty sure he was bullshitting me with that name but he was gone the next day.
