2020 Reunion Information
2nd Battalion, 4th Marines Association – 2020 Annual Reunion – Pleasanton, Ca – Sept 3-6, 2020
The 2020 reunion will be held in Pleasanton, California, which is located just east of the San Francisco Bay Area in the Livermore Valley. Pleasanton is easily reached via several interstate highways, depending upon which direction you travel, and close to three large airports.
Please note that this year’s reunion starts on Thursday vice Wednesday due to us piggybacking off the Caledonian Club of San Francisco’s contracted rates.
The reason for having the reunion in this location is two-fold. First and foremost, as always, we are afforded the opportunity to reacquaint ourselves with old friends and make new ones in a special “band of brothers” event. Secondly, this year will offer a new and unique venue on Saturday and Sunday to experience a Scottish games in conjunction with our reunion events.
Host Brooks Wilson is a member of the Caledonian Club of San Francisco as well as the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines Association. The Caledonian Club has hosted an annual Scottish gathering and games since 1866 in the Bay Area and it is the largest Scottish games of its’ type in the world, drawing 35-50,000 on the Labor Day weekend each year. Brooks thought it would be a lot of fun to combine the two events into one “lallapalooza!” A similar reunion was held in 2010 and all who attended had a wonderful time. Members will get to experience the fun of attending a Scottish heritage event including such things as ethnic foods, whiskey tasting, folks in period regalia, contests for pipers, drummers, pipe bands, drum majors and athletes, sheep dog exhibitions, Scottish sheep, dogs and cattle, clan tents where one might begin the search for his or her roots, and two grandstand shows per day to cap the excitement and wonder of it all. Not to be forgotten are the many vendors selling their Scottish wares should members be caught up in the swirl of things and desire to take home a remembrance or two. Members might even find out what’s under a kilt!
Our guests of honor will be Colonel Robert Weiler and his lovely wife Nicole. The Colonel is the Commanding Officer of the 5th Marine Regiment and former Battalion Commander of the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines.
Members will discover that the people who attend this fine event are very patriotic and appreciative of our military. Our Association will be recognized at the grandstand shows each day. A special feature at these shows will the 1st Marine Division Band from Camp Pendleton, California, which has been invited to perform along with the many pipe bands. The closing shows each day will feature 30 plus massed pipe bands and the 1st Marine Division Band in a magnificent pageantry not to be missed!
The games are held at the Alameda County Fairgrounds which is approximately four miles away from the reunion headquarters hotel: San Ramon Marriott in San Ramon, California. Presently there is a block of 50 rooms available offered at $117.00 per night plus local taxes. There is no charge for parking. The San Ramon Marriott is a smoke free hotel, but smoking is allowed on the patios and in the courtyards. The hotel has a very nice restaurant which will help host our traditional banquet. There are also a number of good restaurants within a short distance to enjoy (please see the list herein of restaurants close by).
For those attendees flying into the Bay Area, there are three airports: San Francisco International (SFO), Oakland International (OAK) and San Jose International (SJC). The latter two are the closest. Transportation is readily available, but perhaps the easiest way to travel between the hotel and airport is by renting a car or using the SuperShuttle. Advanced reservations are required for the SuperShuttle and they may be made online on SuperShuttle’s website. When you make these reservations, SuperShuttle will reply with a confirmation and location for pick up at the airport.
Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) – If desired, the BART system connects the San Francisco and Oakland airports to the Dublin BART station. BART does not connect with the San Jose International airport. Uber, Lyft or a taxi may be used to transfer from the Dublin BART station to the San Ramon Marriott.
If you desire to travel via BART to any Bay Area location, plan ahead on the internet by going to the BART website here. Use the Dublin/Pleasanton station as your starting point. Complete schedule information is available online or at the station.
Rental Cars – Rental car agencies abound in all the airports as well. It is recommended that you rent a car for getting around, but use the BART to go to San Francisco to avoid heavy traffic and high parking costs.
Transportation between Hotels and Games
There will be a free shuttle available for games attendees between the hotels and games site at the Alameda County Fairgrounds both days of the Games. Service starts at 0630 and concludes at 1930. Each shuttle trip takes approximately 40 minutes to an hour depending upon the number of riders and traffic. It would be easier to drive to the Games in your POV or rental car, but be aware that parking costs $10 per day. Trip time for POV’s / rental cars is about 15-20 minutes. There are golf cart shuttles from the parking areas to the Games event locations for those needing assistance.
Hopefully, the information contained herein will whet your appetite to attend what may be the best reunion yet! Registration and daily schedule information is presented below. Brooks, Colleen and the reunion staff eagerly await your arrival and trust you will have as much fun as we will in putting on this wonderful event for you!
There is a grandstand show mid day and at the end of the afternoon (check your programs for times). Veterans are honored at most Scottish Games and ours is no exception. There will be a block of box seats set aside for members and families of the 2/4 Association to sit together. These seats are handicap accessible by elevator at the east end of the grandstands. Our president and guests of honor will be invited to stand on the main stage to be recognized by the Chief of the Caledonian Club at the opening show. All veterans will be recognized during the afternoon show. The 1st Marine Division Band will also be playing, so do not miss these shows!
